Houghton Cranford Smith

Born in Arlington, New Jersey in 1887, Houghton Cranford Smith's journey began in Provincetown in the early 1900' as a student of and class monitor for Charles W. Hawthorne and modernist artist E. Ambrose Webster. Smith then attended the Academie Julian in Paris, France where he studied with Jean-Paul Laurens and later returned to study with Andre Lhote and Amedee Ozenfant. His travels included South America, Bermuda, New Mexico, Spain, and Kansas among others. He has exhibited at many elite galleries including Grace Borgenicht, Louis Newman Gallery, Archives of American Art, Richard York, David Findlay Jr., and James Bakker Gallery. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda.
